Reflection

The Global Learning Medallion Program at FIU has broadened my perspective on the world. This program has given me the opportunity to explore diverse cultures, ideas, and viewpoints, deepening my understanding of how people from different backgrounds connect and interact.

Attending the Tuesday Times Roundtable sessions has greatly enriched my global perspective, exposing me to diverse ideas and opinions beyond my own. Each session introduced a unique global topic, many of which were entirely new to me. Not only did I have the opportunity to develop my own thoughts on these subjects, but I also gained insight into the perspectives of others, fostering a well-rounded and multifaceted understanding of the world. I came to realize the significance of engaging with viewpoints different from my own, as this is essential to truly grasp the complexities of the world around us.

During my internship with BLUE Missions in the Dominican Republic, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture and witness the realities of poverty firsthand. Sleeping on cots, showering with buckets, and playing baseball with a makeshift ball of socks and a stick deepened my global awareness, making me realize how sheltered my life at home had been from the hardships many people face daily. Poverty is a widespread global issue affecting countless communities, yet I had never truly understood its impact until I stepped into the “campo.” This experience ignited a passion within me — not only to learn more about poverty but also to take an active role in addressing it.

Through my work with IBHS and the Bandhwari Women’s Project, I engaged in global problem-solving, applying my skills to make a meaningful impact. As the Director of the Bandhwari Women’s Project, I played a direct role in supporting an impoverished community and contributing to positive social change. This position allowed me to deepen my understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and actively work toward their fulfillment. Visiting the Bandhwari Village in India was a transformative experience, as I had the opportunity to engage with artisan women, hear their stories, and gain a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges they face. This journey not only reshaped my perspective on poverty but also reinforced my commitment to finding sustainable solutions. Since then, I have continued to lead the Bandhwari Women’s Project, raising funds and spreading awareness to support this vital cause.

These experiences have profoundly shaped my worldview and sparked a deep passion for creating positive change. Through this program, I have learned how to apply the skills gained from my business degree to address global challenges. With a strong desire to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector, I am confident that I can continue working toward meaningful solutions to global issues. As I step into the workforce after graduation, I will carry the lessons from this program with me, seeking opportunities to serve, learn, and make a lasting impact on the world.
